2013 4th Annual Summer Fitness Challenge!!

I hope you are one of those people who are as excited about this as I am!  I love, love, LOVE the summer challenges!!  Now, back for the 4th summer is 5 Nuts in a Nutshell Summer Fitness Challenge!
(Feel free to share this picture on FB)
This year I am going to change things up a bit... again.  Don't worry, for those of you who like the 120, 170, and 220 mile challenges, things pretty much can stay the same.  What I want to do is add a super fun twist and add a TEAM element to the challenge.  Not only are we going for our goal miles this year, but all our miles together are going to get us across the good ol' U S of A.  Every week, not only will your miles be posted like the previous years, but there will be a running total with a map showing where Team Nutshell is.  Sound fun?!  I think so!  I am super stoked!!

I also want to introduce my helper this year, Ariana.  Last year it was really overwhelming for me because I was so sick.  The last day of the challenge I got an email from her asking if she could help this year.  I was all over that!  In addition to her services, she also came up with the whole idea of going across the USA.  So I want you to meet Ariana.  We go WAY back to our high school days, believe it or not.  And then 6 or so years later I married her cousin, so now we are family.  She is also a fellow mom, Military wife, and amazing cake-decorator! I am really happy to have her help me out on the summer challenge this year.

So dust off those running shoes!  Here is the 411 on the Summer Challenge this year:

There will still be the 3 levels of challenges. YAY!

120 Mile Challenge:  This is going to be the Bronze Challenge.  For those of you who just want to get out this summer and get active.

170 Mile Challenge:  This it the Silver Challenge, for our seasoned challengers who want to step it up from last year, push a little harder.

220 Mile Challenge:  The Gold Challenge!  This is for the over achievers who are especially training for races who get in several miles per day.  (This year I am going for it!!!)

Rules and Information:

Starts: June 1st
Ends: Aug 31st

Goal: Exercise 120, 170, or 220 miles in 3 months and make it as a team across the USA!!

Rules:  You can walk, run, elliptical, bike, or Swim (NEW this year) to count your miles.  HOWEVER, since it is easier and faster to BIKE, you can only count 1 mile for every 3 miles you bike.  So say you do 6 miles on your stationary bike, you can only count 2 of those miles toward your goal. And Swimming can be a little more time consuming and it's a full body workout, so for every 1/2 mile swam you can count it as 1 mile toward your goal.

Miles only count if they are consecutively earned.  So you can't just strap on your pedometer and count your steps throughout the day and say you walked 10 miles or whatever.  This is a challenge!  That means you can only count miles when you set out to burn fat and calories and get in shape!

ANYONE can join!

This challenge is FREE! It is not a contest.  Just a challenge for YOU!  Something to get you off your butt this summer, to do something good for your body.

What's in it for you?  Well, not only will you get in shape, meet fitness goals, feel good about yourself, AND feel like a part of a world wide team with similar goals -- BUT you will also have a chance to win some prizes!  We have some fantastic sponsors this year!

How to Join:  Just email me at nutsinanutshell(at)gmail(dot)com, your name and give me the name you would like to be called on your updates, your email address, and your blog address if you have one that you would like linked to your stats (optional).  Also, let me know which level of challenge (bronze, silver, or gold) you are going for so we can get the route planned according to our goals.  If you have any questions, please make sure you read through this whole post... and if you still can't find your answer then PLEASE email me!  I tend to forget stuff once in a while....

How this Works:  Every Thursday you will report your miles to me at my email address above.  (By joining the challenge, I will send you a cool spreadsheet my husband made that will track your miles if you want to use it.)  I will send out reminders too (If I remember).  You are also ENCOURAGED to share anything you would like to share, your goals, pictures of races you did, challenges you meet face on, etc.  I LOVE to share your stories to motivate everyone else.  This challenge is about YOU and what YOU can do... so be proud of your accomplishments and SHARE!  Then on Friday I will post how everyone is doing, where we are on the route AND some other fun stuff too!  That's it!!

And feel free to grab a button for your blog if you have one:

Old from last year:

*New* one for this year!!

You have until June 7th to join the challenge, so email me ASAP!!!!
Spread the Word! Let's see how many people we can get on board this year!  Please share this post on Facebook, your personal blog, Twitter, Pintrest, etc to get the word out!  Even if you don't want to do it, you may have some friends out there that do!  Also, we all have friends that sell stuff that might want to help sponsor it.

Sponsors:  I am also looking for sponsors to help me with prizes and in return you get some free advertising.  So if you, or any one you know would like to help me out here, email me!  I will be sponsoring this myself by giving away some of my crochet items.

Can't wait to hear from you!!

-Cat & Ariana

Some of you may have some smaller children that like to ride their bikes along with you while you walk or ride with them.  My kids like to follow me with their scooters sometimes.  My kids don't get in a ton of miles, but I thought it would be fun if they could do the challenge as a duo team so their efforts counted too.  So my boys are going to be "Team Tweedles".  If you have a bunch of little ones that would like to do the same, please let me know!! I will add their team name to my update list :) -Cat

Help! Cat I have been following your post for a little less than two years now. I love it! But I am very overweight. I will just say I am very close to hitting 250 pounds now. I hate it. About six year ago I was in a size five and just went up from there. I went from size five to a ten in about seven months. Then from there married in a size twelve. That was four years ago this July. Now, well I am so heavy that I wear a size 20. Help. What do I do? My legs and feet just hurt so bad. I have tried the tread mill and like it a lot. I tried moving up to a jog after doing fast walking for about a week. Then I hurt my leg so bad that now I can't hardly use the stairs at my own home. My husband who is Army Ranger told me he thought I gave myself a shin splint. He said it meant to work harder. Well, he is deployed now and I have kept up the gym. I am getting no better and it actually as caused me to quit going all together. I don't want it to be that way. I have a goal to run with my husband but have to get in shape to do it. How do I do it? Thanks!
